Vagabonds by definition are those who have no home lacking the security of the basic necessities for survival. However, what Langston Hughes describes are not just the broken bodies of the multitudes desolated by deprivation but also their broken spirits. For what is more devastating to the human soul than to have your suffering answered by abandonment and apathy; truly the ultimate betrayal. This horrendous situation of human alienation is inevitable under capitalism. Every human being is innately born to communicate, cooperate and to love but what Hughes portrays in Vagabond is a society anti-human to the core where the destitute are the victims.
